Abstract

People need an organized means of communication in any social structure. This tool is usually called a language. Although the term language seems difficult to define precisely due to its social complexity, there is a general consensus among linguistic scholars that it is a system of symbols intended for communication purposes. This system includes a set of objects organized as a whole and placed in such a way that they act together to perform a certain function [1]. Language as a means of communication between people includes many features: it is governed by rules, it is a system, it performs functions such as providing information, expressing feelings and emotions, establishing relationships, exercising power, and marking identity [2]. As people use more than one language, terms like bilingualism, trilingualism, and multilingualism arise.
